What is Vitamin?

Did you know that the word “vita” means “life” in Latin? 😊

If we look at the origin of the word vitamin, it means “an amine essential for life.” (An amine is a type of chemical compound.) Vitamins are chemical compounds that are essential not only for humans but for all living things. Let me tell you a few real stories about how some vitamins were discovered.

A doctor named Eijkman was feeding his chickens polished white rice. After some time, he noticed that the chickens developed weakness and stiffness in their legs. Later, he switched to feeding them unpolished rice with the bran still on it, and the chickens recovered. This observation eventually led to the discovery of vitamin B.

There is another interesting story about sailors. In the past, sailors who spent long periods at sea often developed bleeding gums, tooth decay, and extreme fatigue. Scientists discovered that these sailors were not eating foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and lemons. Their illnesses were caused by a lack of vitamin C. Thanks to these sailors, we learned just how important vitamin C is for staying healthy.

As these examples show us that, vitamins are vital for our health. To stay healthier and stronger, to keep our hair looking beautiful, our skin glowing, and our brains working at their best, we need to include vitamins in our daily diet.

So, where can we get these vitamins?

Many vitamins are found in a wide variety of fruits, colorful vegetables, and grain products such as bulgur, noodles, and bread.
